What causes posture problems?

There are a number of causes, but posture problems most commonly are a response that your nervous system has to stress. Stress comes in the form of traumas, toxins and thoughts. Frequently people think that their problem is coming from their poor ergonomics at their desk. These posture problems typically develop over months to years. The three most common cause’s posture problems are poor ergonomics, repetitive movements, and scoliosis.

Fun fact that your head on average weighs 10-12 pounds every inch it moves in front of your shoulders adds an additional 10-12 pounds of leverage on to your neck, shoulders and back. For example if you are looking down at your phone in your lap your head will essentially weigh 60 pounds! This does not necessarily just cause possible neck pain, but shoulder pain, back pain, tight leg muscles, foot pain, numbness and tingling or even sciatica.

Some people may try to change their ergonomics, use posture apps or devices (these can actually make your problem worse), massage or try strengthening their body. These don’t typically get to the root cause of the posture problem, but may feel like they are helpful in the short term. These don’t typically provide a long term answer. How do we evaluate for posture problems?

We first start with a complementary phone consultation to get a better idea of what is going on and if what you have would be a good fit with our office. If it seems that we will be able to help you, the second step will be to schedule an appointment for you where we will do our testing process and evaluate where your body is out of balance. Third, we will let you know what the best steps will be for you and what you are dealing with after these tests. Fourth we will then go over your recommendations for care to address what is causing your problem.

What services do we provide?

Our goal is to get you feeling better as quickly as possible, for some people that may take days and some it may take weeks. The foundation of what we do in the office is the chiropractic adjustment. When appropriate we will also include corrective and strengthening exercises and stretches. We also make lifestyle recommendations to help incorporate better ergonomics, sleep routines, food choices, nutrition and more.
